Why you need a domain name15 September 2005
Using your own domain name builds credibility
Customers will feel more comfortable if you have your own domain name. It makes them feel they are dealing with an established company, rather than a fly-by-night operation. If you don't have your own domain name, you may lose business to a similar supplier who does.
A domain name offers easier recognition
It's considerably easier for people to remember a domain name specific to your business rather than a complicated address that contains your ISP's details and the directory where your website is located.
Using a domain name brings better search rankings
Search engines take a number of factors into account when deciding which websites to display first in their listings. However, it's generally accepted that most search engines rank pages hosted at their own unique domain name higher.
Having your own domain name makes you look bigger than you are
Once you have your own domain name, you can create a number of email addresses that are actually aliases to another email account. This means you can set up sales@domainname.com, support@domainname.com, etc. This may help you manage incoming email easier. It will certainly make your company look bigger if you're on your own.
A domain name brings flexibility
If you use your domain name for email, then all addresses should stay the same should you change ISP. This isn't true if you use your basic ISP email address.
Domain names are considered a considerable company asset
If you ever consider selling your business on, a purchaser is likely to expect a domain name to be included in the company assets. Certainly, your business will be considered more attractive if it has its own domain name.
